Square feet measure area, and cubic yards measure volume, so you cannot convert one to the other without a depth. Multiply the area by the depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27, because a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft. For example, 200 square feet at 4 inches deep is 200 × 0.333 = 66.7 cubic feet, or 2.47 cubic yards.
Cubic yards are how bulk mulch, soil, gravel and sand are usually sold in the US. If you want bags, weight or material-specific advice, use the mulch, topsoil or gravel calculators, which build on this same volume.
Use this page when you only need a volume. If you know the material, a specific calculator adds the details that matter: the mulch calculator counts bags, the topsoil calculator adds weight and settling, the gravel calculator converts to tons using density, and the concrete calculator counts premixed bags and ready-mix orders.
Multiply the square feet by the depth in feet, then divide by 27. For 200 square feet at 4 inches (0.333 ft), that is 66.7 ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards.
It depends on depth. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 at 2 inches, 108 at 3 inches, 81 at 4 inches and 54 at 6 inches.
27. A cubic yard is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet.
Multiply cubic metres by 1.308. One cubic yard is 0.7646 cubic metres. Switch the calculator to metric to see both.
500 square feet at 3 inches (0.25 ft) is 125 cubic feet, or 4.63 cubic yards.
Yes for the volume. All of them are sold by the cubic yard. Weight differs by material, so use the specific calculator when you need tons.
