Paver Calculator

This paver calculator gives the number of pavers for a patio, path or driveway, plus the volume of base gravel and bedding sand underneath.

Last updated

How many pavers do I need for a 16 × 12 ft patio?

With 6 × 9 in pavers and 1/8 in joints, you need 495 pavers, or 545 with 10% waste. The base takes 2.61 yd³ of gravel and 0.65 yd³ of sand.

How this is calculated

Formulas

  1. Area = length × width.
  2. Paver footprint = (paver length + joint) × (paver width + joint).
  3. Pavers = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ paver footprint, rounded up.
  4. Base gravel = area × base depth × (1 + waste %). Bedding sand = area × sand depth × (1 + waste %).

Assumptions

  • The area is a flat rectangle. For curves or irregular shapes, split the area into rectangles and add them.
  • The default sand depth is about 1 in (2.5 cm), and the base depth is a typical patio depth. Change both to suit your project.
  • The same waste percentage is applied to pavers, base and sand.
  • Compaction, edge restraints and joint sand are not included.

Before you build a paver patio

A paver surface is only as good as what is under it. Pavers rest on a compacted gravel base and a thin layer of bedding sand, and both need to be ordered along with the pavers.

Base depth depends on the soil and the load. Foot traffic needs less than vehicles, and soft or wet soil needs more. Follow the paver manufacturer's guidance or ask a local installer. Size the base with the gravel calculator and any concrete edging or footings with the concrete calculator.

Base, sand and edges

Dig out the area to the paver thickness plus the base and sand depth, compact the soil, then lay the gravel base in layers and compact each one. Screed a thin, level layer of bedding sand, lay the pavers, and compact them into it.

Edge restraints hold the pavers in place and are installed along the perimeter. After laying, sweep joint sand into the gaps and compact again. Both are bought separately from the quantities this calculator gives.

Paver calculator in square feet or square metres

Choose I know the area and enter square feet or square metres. The number of pavers, base gravel and bedding sand are calculated from that area, the paver size and the joint. The table above lists pavers per 100 square feet and per square metre for common sizes.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra paver should I order?

10% is typical for straight patterns. Use 10–15% for curves, diagonal or herringbone patterns, where more pavers are cut.

How deep should the paver base be?

Patios commonly use around 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of compacted gravel, and driveways more. Soil, climate and traffic all matter, so follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How much sand goes under pavers?

About 1 inch (2.5 cm) of bedding sand is common. The calculator computes sand from the depth you enter.

Does the joint gap matter?

Yes, it slightly changes how many pavers fit in the area. Enter the gap from the paver manufacturer's guidance.

How many pavers do I need per 100 square feet?

It depends on the size. With a 1/8 inch joint, 6 × 9 in pavers need 258 per 100 square feet, or about 284 with 10% waste. 12 × 12 in pavers need 98, or 108 with waste.

Do I need jointing sand?

Most installations fill the joints with sand after laying, which locks the pavers together. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your paver and use.
