The grout joint makes each tile 'bigger' on the wall by the joint width, so the calculator uses tile size plus joint to count how many fit. It matters most with small tiles.
Order all your tiles at once, from the same production lot. Shades vary between batches, and extra tiles are useful for future repairs. Covering a whole room in planks instead? Use the flooring calculator.
Smaller tiles mean more joints and more cutting around edges, and bigger tiles waste more at the room's edges. Straight (grid) layouts waste the least. Diagonal and brick-bond patterns need more tiles, so raise the waste percentage. Large-format tiles also need a flat substrate.
Measure the area to the finished edges, and treat any section that is not rectangular as separate rectangles. For walls and backsplashes, enter the width and height as the two dimensions, and calculate each wall separately.
Choose I know the area to enter square feet or square metres for a floor, a wall or a backsplash. Enter the tile size in inches or centimetres, and the grout joint in inches or millimetres, and you get the tiles and boxes, with waste added.
10% is a common minimum. For diagonal layouts, large tiles or rooms with many corners, 15–20% is safer.
Yes, slightly. Wider joints mean each tile covers a little more area, so fewer tiles are needed.
Enter the wall's width and height as the length and width, and subtract any openings by calculating separate areas.
Boxes are whole units, so the count is rounded up. Extra tiles in the box are your spares.
With a 1/8 inch grout joint, 98 tiles. Add 10% for waste and you need about 108.
Multiply the backsplash's width by its height for the area, and enter those as the length and width. Subtract nothing for outlets, since the cut tiles are covered by the waste allowance.
With 30 × 30 cm tiles and a 3 mm joint, about 11 per square metre. Switch the calculator to metric to try your own tile size.
